OkMap – Free GPS Mapping Software
There are several bits and pieces you are going to like about the Gian Paolo Saliola-developed application called OkMap. The first thing you are going to like is the fact that it is freeware. This means that you can use OkMap free of charge for as long as you want without having to pay a dime.
To get to use OkMap, you must first download the application. The download weighs in at close to 7MB, so on a high-speed internet connection the download will complete in no time at all. What you are downloading is the setup wizard for OkMap, and the setup wizard for .Net Framework (which is a requirement for OkMap to work).
To get to use OkMap, you need to install the application – once the download has completed. In this regard you should know that OkMap works with pretty much any version of the Microsoft-developed Windows operating system. This includes Windows Server 2003 and 2008, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and the latest iteration, Windows 7.
The hardware requirements you must meet to be able to use OkMap are: a 1GHz processor, 512MB or RAM, and 50MB of free hard drive space.
What can you do with OkMap? With this application you can work on your computer screen with digital maps that you bought or scanned. OkMap can also import vectorial data from the most common formats and DEM data relevant to height information. You can crate waypoints, routes and tracks directly on your computer; then you can upload the data to your GPS.
The data that your GPS collects can be downloaded onto your computer and used to create different types of statistics.
OkMap works with Google Maps and Google Earth. Portions of maps are immediately available in OkMap thanks to Google Maps. View your maps and paths in 3D in OkMap thanks to Google Earth.
